My New Project - Marine turtle monitoring

What am doing now? As you may know I, along with a management planning team, completed a Management Plan for Guyana's Shell Beach Protected Area in December 2014. This was done for the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) under a contract with Guyana's Environmental Protection Agency.

Now I am back working with the PAC supporting the implementation of the management plan. This placement has been made possible through a partnership between CUSO International and World Wildlife Fund.

One of the reasons Shell Beach is a protected area is because of its importance as a nesting grounds for threatened marine turtles. Therefore one of the objectives is to conduct monitoring, data collection, and research to support conservation of marine turtles. The nesting season takes place every year from February to August.

So here I am on assignment at Almond Beach as a PAC Monitoring and Research Officer to oversee the monitoring activities and provide scientific and technical support to a local conservation NGO - the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society. Almond Beach is in the northwestern part of Guyana and in the northwestern part of Shell Beach Protected Area near the Waini River mouth. GPS location is 8.39981 -59.75427. Almond Beach is an Amerindian community of about 40 people (of which about 26 are children).

I arrived here on February 9 and will be here until the end of July. So look out for regular posts on the place, activities, and conservation efforts at Almond Beach.
